NOTE 03 / HOME CARE REFERENCE

Care for the chain

A quiet drivetrain starts with a clean working area and a compatible lubricant. Keep the oil where it belongs and away from the brakes.

01 / Identify the system

Find the chain and drivetrain model before buying a wear gauge, replacement chain or connecting link. Keep the model’s service document with the tool. A reusable-looking connector is not evidence that the manufacturer permits another use.

These notes cover routine external care. Chain sizing, connector installation and replacement decisions require the instructions for the exact drivetrain. Do not remove the chain merely to follow a cleaning routine.

02 / Clean, dry, lubricate

  1. Check for obvious damage or wear before spending time on cleaning. A chain already due for replacement needs the appropriate service.
  2. Protect the work area and braking surfaces. Use bicycle-compatible degreaser with a brush or a compatible chain-cleaning device.
  3. Remove the cleaning residue as the product directs, then dry the chain before applying lubricant.
  4. Apply chain lubricant to the moving link areas in accordance with its label. Wipe off surplus from the outside so it does not collect more dirt.

03 / Keep a useful record

A simple paper note can record the date, chain model, lubricant used and the wear-tool reading. Treat that as your own observation, not a guarantee of remaining life. A wear tool must be suitable for the chain being measured.

Do not copy a replacement threshold from another drivetrain. The applicable chain maker’s documentation and the compatible tool instructions decide how to interpret a reading. See the linked Shimano and SRAM document directories.
