NOTE 07 / HOME CARE REFERENCE
The right fit, then the right force
Start with the task and the component manual. A compact set of suitable tools is more useful than a drawer of almost-correct ones.
01 / A modest care kit
- Observe
- A clean cloth, useful light and the exact component manuals.
- Inflate
- A valve-compatible pump and a gauge for the required range.
- Clean
- Soft brushes, separate cloths and compatible cleaning products.
- Fasten
- Correctly fitting bits and an appropriate torque tool, where required.
Choose tools only after identifying the fastener and the task. A rounded or badly fitting bit is a reason to stop, not to add leverage.
02 / Torque belongs to a specific joint
Too little or too much tightening can damage a joint. Use the frame and component manufacturers’ instructions for every torque value, bolt sequence and thread preparation. Do not substitute a generic table for a model-specific specification.
Grease, threadlocker, carbon assembly compound and dry assembly are different conditions. Follow the specified preparation and use a torque tool within its operating range. The same-looking bolt on another bicycle is not a reference value.
03 / Make a small job sheet
- Component model and the manual revision you consulted.
- Exact fastener location, required bit and specified thread condition.
- Manufacturer’s torque value and tightening sequence, if applicable.
- Post-work inspection and the controlled function check.
This is a blank planning structure, not a completed service record. Never tighten a creaking component at random: identify the cause and inspect for damage before deciding on a procedure.
