NOTE 05 / HOME CARE REFERENCE
Find the cause of a flat
This note is for a conventional clincher tyre with an inner tube. It is an orientation checklist, to be used alongside the wheel and tyre instructions.
01 / Before removing the wheel
Identify the retention mechanism and the brake system. Follow the bicycle maker’s removal procedure. Switch off an e-bike and consult its wheel-removal instructions; motor wiring changes the job. Do not disconnect unfamiliar wiring.
Prepare a compatible tube, suitable tyre levers and a pump. Note the tyre’s position relative to the valve before removal so a hole in the tube can be related to a place in the tyre.
02 / Inspect before replacing
- Fully deflate the tube before lifting a tyre bead. Use suitable tyre levers rather than a screwdriver or another sharp substitute.
- Remove the tube and locate the leak. Inspect the corresponding tyre area and check the rim tape and valve hole. Look carefully for sharp debris rather than sweeping an unprotected finger through the casing.
- Check tyre, tube and rim size compatibility. A damaged casing or rim needs attention before installing a replacement tube.
- Refit using the manufacturer’s method. Avoid trapping the tube beneath the bead, then check seating while inflating gradually within the permitted limits.
03 / Return to ride
Reinstall the wheel using its exact retention procedure. Restore any brake connection opened for removal, then confirm the wheel rotates and each brake works. Do not assume an axle is secure because the wheel appears straight.
Repeat the pre-ride checks and a low-speed test in a clear area. A second flat in the same place suggests that the original cause may still be present.
